Default Don't Drug Your Kid

Some teachers who don't know how to teach or contol a class try to get parents to drug their kids. I would insist that the teacher back off and get some skills. Drugs can do more harm than good. Call me Tom Cruise, but I think it's horrible to put kids into a stupor so teachers don't have to work as hard. Just say no.

I thought that it was forbidden for teachers to make any kind of unofficial clinical diagnosis or to even breathe the "R" word. I know it is in Connecticut. Shame on her - is she an MD?

Teachers are not supposed to tell you diagnoises. They can however, let you know what they see in class and suggest. Just because your son is energetic doesn't mean he is ADHD. Where there anyother symptoms that the teacher discussed? I think you might need to talk to the teacher and let her know your concerns of her telling you that your son needs to be medicated. If that doesn't help then you might want to talk to the principal.

I know a family whose youngest son was energetic all the time when he was in early elementary school. His teacher decided that he MUST have AD/HD & his parents didn't fight it when she suggested they medicate him. They just took him to a doctor & told the doctor that his teacher thought he had AD/HD because of his actions in class. His doctor listened to them, diagnosed him as AD/HD (I don't think he had it, I think he was just an energetic little boy) & prescribed him Ritalin. Well then he started having more problems. He eventually ended up taking 6 different kinds of medication, morning, noon & night. Some were to wake him up in the morning, some were to keep his mood balanced, some were to calm him down & able to sleep at night. He didn't have any of these problems before he started taking Ritalin though, but his parents don't see it that way.
